Art Event #5

1. The Energetic Wave of the Future, Tuesday, November 8th, 2011. Dr. Nicholas Dogris, a health psychologist and expert in the field of neurofeedback, presents the latest in Neurofeedback and a new technology that he developed called NeuroField. NeuroField is a low intensity transcranial magnetic stimulation device that is being used for a variety of treatments including autism, ADHD, and traumatic brain injury.

2. I came away with some of the notes I took while watching Dr. Dogris’s PowerPoint presentation, and because he refers to autism, and I know I was diagnosed as mildly autistic, I had a feeling that everything he wanted to talk about would be important to know.

3. Dr. Dogris had these charts he called quantitative brain maps, which consists of top views of a person’s head and readings from electrical surges. The rows included absolute power, relative power, amplitude asymmetry, coherence, and phase log. The columns included delta, theta, alpha, beta, and high beta. These maps were used to analyze a patient’s brainwaves before and after the mental treatment needed to cure the patient. Maps certainly are useful to explain one’s findings in a particular field.

4. Some of the subjects used for QEEG measurement in NeuroField included an Iraq war veteran, a woman with attention deficit disorder, and a man with a brain tumor. After hearing about those subjects, I began to think I wasn’t always the only one prone to mental disorders. And if the results have taught me anything, anyone can still live a better life with plenty of assistance.

5. Dr. Dogris made a good impression of himself, and his presentation, without question, was executed perfectly. Although the words on his slides were easy to read, they could have been a little brighter so they’d stand out more.

6. Joe Kamiya popularized neurofeedback in the 1960s and demonstrated that Alpha states could be conditioned. From the late ’60s to the early ’70s, Barbara Brown wrote several books on biofeedback, making people more aware of the technology. Barry Sterman, Joel F. Lubar, and Margaret Ayers indicated a high efficacy for beta training, involving the role of sensorimotor rhythmic EEG activity. This was used in the treatment of epilepsy, attention deficit disorder, and hyperactive disorder.

7. When Dr. Dogris talked about his son who used to have a mental disorder, I felt he deserved to have a lot of attention. He talked about types of Neurofeedback, including the Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS) and Infra Low Frequency Neurofeedback. And NeuroField? That sounds like a very useful method, I mean how else would we cope with the whole world if Dr. Dogris didn’t develop it? I can safely say I feel respect for him because of his selflessness, knowledge of brainwaves, and enthusiasm for finding a cure for mentally disabled victims.
